Hello, I'm Eloise
I am a freelance journalist and creative writer based in Birmingham, UK.
A little bit about me.
My name is Eloise Hodges, I am eighteen years old, and currently on a gap year. At A-level I took English Literature, Media, and History, and received AAB, and I am going to study English Literature and Media and Communication at the University of Liverpool next September. I am an aspiring journalist and author, and during my gap year I am going travelling across Europe and Asia in order to gain more experience not only with my writing, but also from the world. My adoration of reading and writing has been present since I first learned to read, leading to my first book, ‘The Ladybird with a Handbag’, written when I was six, however it didn't attract many publishers.
Alongside writing, I love to travel. I believe one of the best opportunities people can have is to immerse themselves into a culture far from their own, and I love to throw myself in the deep end and become part of a world very different from my own. Additionally, I love music and concerts , and most weekends will be found at a gig with my friends, I truly believe nothing brings people together more than music.

Experience
So far in my career, I have experience in a range of journalistic areas.
In February of 2023, I acquired a week of work experience with Bullivant Media. During this, I was writing local news stories, rewarding me with the understanding of how a newsroom functions, and preparing me for my future career.
I also have experience with sports journalism, as I wrote articles and match reports for a local hockey team. Whilst sports is not my main interest, I was extremely grateful to gain this experience and broaden my knowledge of the sports journalism sector, and my skills as a journalist. From this opportunity, I learnt the importance of not shying away from challenges and have since endeavoured to take all opportunities that approach me.
In hopes to enhance my writing and potential, I also reached out to independent music magazines, such as mxdwn, and wrote 5 music news articles a week on a volunteer basis for three months. Additionally, I volunteer for a Brum radio, and I write pieces for their blog and website. I adored this experience of writing about one of my passions, and I am keen to write more music reviews.
With my Sixth Form, I curated the ‘Student’s Monthly’, a sixth form newspaper, for which I wrote for extensively and was the chief editor of. This was a wonderful opportunity for me and other students to get involved with the school, and to develop our skills in journalism.
Alongside writing experience, I also gained work experience in public relations, as I am also very interested in media. The week I spent at East Village PR was exceptional; the team was wonderful and I discovered a compelling interest in public relations.
I am very interested in gaining more experience in all fields of journalism, and am more than happy to write for all topics, and will not shy away from challenges.
